Open your Bible and read Psalm 34:1-8
“Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.”
Psalm 34:5 · ESVThere is a difference between guilt and shame, and it matters here. Guilt says I did something bad. Shame says I am something bad. Guilt can be paid. Shame just sits on you.
Almost everyone is carrying some of it. The thing that was done to you that you somehow blame yourself for. The version of you that showed up during the worst year. The look on someone's face you cannot get out of your head. Shame makes you hide, and hiding makes it heavier. That is the loop.
What the psalm describes is the opposite motion. Look toward Him instead of down. Faces lifted rather than turned away. The offer is not that God overlooks what happened, it is that He deals with it fully enough that you never have to duck your head about it again.
You have carried it long enough. What would it be like to set it down?
Do this today
Name your shame out loud, once, and then say out loud what you wish were true about it.
An honest thing to say to God
“God, I have been hiding for a long time. I am tired of it.”
