Day 35 of 60 · The cross

Nobody Earns This

Open your Bible and read Ephesians 2:1-10

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 · ESV

Every other system on earth runs on merit. School, work, fitness, reputation. You produce, you get. That is so deep in us that when Christianity says the opposite, plenty of people find it offensive.

And there are two ways to find it offensive. If you have worked hard at being decent your whole life, being told your record buys nothing feels like a slap. If you have wrecked things badly, being told forgiveness is free feels too easy, almost unfair to your victims.

Both reactions are worth sitting with rather than rushing past. The Christian answer to the second one is that it was not free. It cost a life. It just did not cost you.

Grace means God's approval is a gift, or it is nothing at all. There is no third option where you contribute a little. Can you receive something you did not earn?

Do this today

Think of the last real gift you received that you could not pay back, and notice what it felt like to accept it.

An honest thing to say to God

“God, receiving is harder for me than earning. If there is a gift here, help me stop reaching for the bill.”
